What are Costello Scores and Levels?

There are three main scores in Costello. You can see them with the 'score' command.

Exploring points Given when you go to new places in Costello. However, some areas (for example the Costello Forest) have descriptions that are all the same and you are not given exploring points in such areas. When you get exploring points you also get the same number of experience points. So, if you get 10 exploring points you also get 10 experience points.
Experience points When you finish quests you are given experience points. You also get experience points when you kill monsters. This score is important for when you want to raise your character's level.
Quest points Given when you finish quests. You can see how many quest points you get for each quest by reading the Quest List in the Guild, by typing 'list quests' or by looking at the quests web page. Quest points are also sometimes needed to advance your character's level.

Advancing your level

You advance your level in the Adventurer's guild which is south of the main shop in the center of the Costello Village. There you will find Andrew, the guildmaster. To see how many experience points, quest points and gold coins you need to advance, type 'cost' when you are inside the guild. To advance your level when you have enough points and money type 'advance' when you are in the guild.

Below is a list of the levels in Costello. It tells you the level number, how many experience points (XP) you need to reach a level and the title of the level. To advance your level you must type 'advance' in the guild when you have enough experience points and quest points(QP). It will also cost you some money (gold coins) in dues to the guild to advance after level 4. The quest point % is the percent of the total number of quest points available in Costello. For example, now (April 2004) there are 43,150 quest points in the Costello game. So, to advance to level 5 you need 20% of 43,150 or 8,630 points. Of course when more quests are added you will need more points to adavnce to level 5. You can see the maximum number of points by typing 'list quests'.

When your level goes up your hit points and other scores also go up. You will get 21 bonus hit points when you advance each level plus an extra 21 points each 5 levels.

From level 3 you can start using magic. This is explained in the table below the levels.

Magic
From level 3 you can start using magic. Different types of magic are called 'spells'. You use magic spells with the 'cast' command. Below is a list of the magic spells in Costello and the commands you need to use them. When you use magic your spirit points go down. If you don't have enough spirit points then you cannot use the spell. You need to change words that are printed in red for your situation.

Let's you heal a limb. For example, if your arm was injured when fighting a monster this magic can heal it. However, the spell is not strong enough to bring back a limb that you lost in a battle. Cast a heal limb spell on my right arm.

Haste

Makes you move faster, giving you more chances to attack an enemy. The duration and speed increases as your level increases.

Magic missile

Let's you send up to five magic missiles of blue light that hit your enemy and do quite a lot of damage. Cast a magic missile spell at the troll.

Make food

Summons up some food for your hungry body. You cannot say what food will be created though. Cast a make food spell.

Make drink

Summons up some drink for your thirsty body. You cannot say what drink will be created though. Cast a make drink spell.

Peace sphere

For a short time this spell surrounds you with a protective sphere. No attacks can hit you and peace returns all around you. Anyone attacking you will stop fighting. Cast a peace sphere spell.

This spell lets you return to the stone dome of the Adventurer's Guild in the Costello Village. Cast a guild dome spell

Restore limbs

Lets you restore a limb that was amputated in battle. It also makes the limb completely healthy. Cast a restore limb spell on my right arm.

Sends a huge ball of fire rushing towards your enemy. Cast a fireball spell at the troll.
